Guild Ink ~ June 2007

From the President
Welcome to the first-ever Guild Ink emailed newsletter. With the retirement of Sarah Fielding-Gunn as editor of Guild Ink, it's become necessary to simplify the production of the newsletter, shorten it, and still get you the important news and events of The Portsmouth Arts Guild in a timely manner. As lovely as the former editions of Guild Ink were, they were not particularly economical. If you're someone who just loved reading your Guild Ink in the bathtub, you can still do that. Just hit the Print button on your keyboard for your own paper copy. This one is 5 pages. Please let me know what you think of doing the newsletter this way. Obviously, it saves the Arts Guild money in postage and paper by delivering it to as many members as possible via email. For members without email, of course we will mail a printed copy of this newsletter to them as before.

This emailed version of Guild Ink is organized into different categories, or departments, which you can scroll through to get to the subjects of most interest to you. As of now, the categories include: News, Exhibition Calendar at the Arts Guild Gallery, Classes & Workshops, Exhibition Opportunities Elsewhere, Member News, New Members, Area Art Shows, and Next Member Meeting Program. I'd also like to start a Member Classified department for members who have anything they want to sell or are looking to buy--art related or otherwise. No charge. So send in your news, your awards and accomplishments, free classified ads, and comments to info@portsmouthartsguild.org .

Thanks for making this transition. Hope you enjoy the new format.
--Eric Broudy, president

News
** Student membership rates--At its May 10 Board meeting, the Board established student rates for Arts Guild membership. Students who have not yet graduated from high school can become Guild members for one-half the regular adult rate, or $20 per year at the current rate. The Board wants to encourage talented young artists to participate in the Arts Guild at whatever level they can.

** Town Hall grant meeting--On May 21, at 7 pm in the Town Hall, the Town of Portsmouth voted a tentative civic grant to the Arts Guild of $1,547, a reduction of 23% from the $2,000 grant initially given last year. (That $2,000 grant was later reduced because of budget cuts to $1,719). The Guild was among six town organizations selected to receive civic grants this year, all reduced by 23% from their previous granted amount. Another 23 organizations were tentatively refused any civic grant support for this year, despite having received such grants in the past. The reduced grants was a result of serious budget problems in the Town budget, much of it having to do with school funding. It is a huge testimony to The Portsmouth Arts Guild that it was one of only six organizations initially chosen for funding. The grants were labeled "tentative" because there are another two rounds of budget considerations before the Town budget is finalized. The Guild's $1,547 grant could conceivably change during those discussions.

** Artist's Choice show report--The May "Artist's Choice" show produced $955 in entry fees and, to date, $453 in expenses. No commissions on sales as of this writing. There were 114 entries with 62 works accepted by the juror, Richard Harrington. Forty-five artists are represented in this show.

** Gardeners thanked--Many thanks to all of those (including Nick Stephens, Daisy Broudy, Linda Remmington, Barbara Lambert, Katherine Dennis, Lyle Rudolph, Wanda Coderre and Sally von Weiffenbach) who have contributed their time, talent, energy, inspiration, encouragement and, of course, plants to our roadside "garden" at the corner of Church Lane. This is truly becoming a community garden! We are still in need of more plants (sun-loving perennials and/or grasses would be best but we'll accept anything) as you continue to thin and shape up your own gardens. Volunteers are also most welcome. Please speak to any of the above people if you wish to donate or help. --Kathy Armor and Katherine Dennis

** Adobe LightRoom 1.1 for digital photographers--According to photo member Jerry Landay, there will shortly be Edition 1.1 of LightRoom. Features include:
-0- Library will become "Catalogue" + new presets.
-0- New sharpening capability beyond unsharp mask
-0- A new "Clarity" feature that the software's head engineer demo-ed. Powerful.
-0- A new "Spray Paint" feature that improves the "sync" or "batch" capabilities.
The advanced new features and other items soon available to LightRoom owner-users; no charge.
