Guild Ink ~ July 2007

“Every artist makes herself born. It is very much harder than the other time, and longer.” –Willa Cather

From the President
Well, I think it's working. Out of 149 members, we're mailing paper copies of Guild Ink to just 14. Everyone else seems content to receive the Guild's news and opportunities via email. Thank you for adjusting to the new format, and please let me know if the Guild Ink is telling you what you need or want to know.

As you may know, I'm looking for someone to help produce this newsletter. I estimate that it takes only about 2 hours a month to do, basically assembling the information in the formatted categories below, sending it to me for email distribution, and printing out and mailing 14 or so copies to members who do not have email. Not a huge task, but one I'd be pleased to delegate. If you think you can help out with the newsletter, please simply click Reply to this email and let me know. I'd be happy to discuss it with you further and answer your questions.

Don't forget, as a Portsmouth Arts Guild member, you're entitled to discounts at Arnold Art in Middletown and Newport, Fast Picture Framing in Portsmouth, and Riverside Art in Somerset. Just bring your membership card and say you'd appreciate the Portsmouth Arts Guild discount. If you know of other places that we should approach for appropriate membership discounts, send me an email and we'll look into it.

If you've driven by the Arts Center recently, you'll have noticed that WE FINALLY HAVE OUR SIGN--"Portsmouth Arts Guild--Center for the Arts." Many thanks to member and signmaker Tom Casselman for his generous gift of a gorgeous $2,500 sign for $500 of Arts Guild cash. It was a long time a-coming, but well worth the wait. Vestry member Bob Gessler helped Jan Armor and myself erect the sign on Friday, June 22. It saw its first opening reception last Friday for the July invitational show titled, "Six Plein Air Painters: Trish Hurley and Friends," which runs until July 29. Come and take a look.

And don't forget, at the next members' meeting, July 17, abstract painter and teacher Norm Petersen will present a program on "Viewing Abstract Art." It will be the perfect introduction to our "Abstractions" exhibition in August. See details below.

Keep this newsletter interesting and relevant. Send in your news, your awards and accomplishments, your free classified ads, ideas and comments to info@portsmouthartsguild.org.  See you at the Arts Center.

--Eric Broudy, president

News
** Website Design for Artists--At the June 19 members' meeting, John Flanders ( john@jflandersconsulting.com ) introduced Guild members to the basics of creating one's own website at budget prices. Among other things, he suggested looking at www.allwebco.com as a website that offers templates for artists and photographers for building a website and www.GoDaddy.com  as a site for registering your domain name for $8.95 a month. For a list of WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get) web editors, he suggested going to www.geniisoft.com/showcase.nsf/WebEditors  in your browser. John is happy to answer questions from Arts Guild members regarding advice on setting up a website. Email him at his address above.

**Photography Show a Success--The juried June photography show had 151 entries, 69 of which were accepted for display. The jurors were Dan McManus, photographer and teacher, and Marion Wilner, painter. Prizes were awarded as follows: 1st Place: Jill McLaughlin, "Three Graces"; 2nd Place, Eric Hovermale, "Night Dancer"; 3rd Place, Lenny Rumpler, "In Between." Honorable Mentions: Donna St Amant, "Roses in Silver"; Ellen Williams, "Fishing Shack"; John Forasté, "Pine Needles and Rock." [Guild members in bold.] The show earned the Guild about $800 after expenses. However, as of June 20, no works in the show had sold.

**2008 Exhibition Plans--The Gallery Committee, chaired by George Furbish, has been working on an exhibition schedule for 2008. So far, the outline looks like this: Jan. and Feb.--gallery closed (except perhaps for classes and meetings); March--non-juried Members' Show; April--Emerging Artists, a student show; May--Eileen Gorton Shanley Retrospective; June--a juried, all-media Portrait show; July--an Invitational Show, invited artists still to be determined; Aug.--a juried Photography show; Sept.--open, non-juried show on theme of Love; Oct./Nov.--6-week juried Members' show; Nov./Dec.--Holiday Show.
