Guild Ink ~ September 2007

"The artist is nothing without the gift, but the gift is nothing without work." --Emile Zola

From the President
Congratulations to Portsmouth Arts Guild members, who took five out of the six awards at the Open Abstractions Show in August! (See News, below, for details.) No sooner does one great show close than another opens. This month brings 16 printmakers from The Providence Art Club to display their works in the arts center. Come to the opening reception on September 7, 6-8 pm, and meet them. Guild member Wanda Perkowska Coderre is among them and gets the credit for bringing this distinguished group of artists (and we hope their friends as well!) to our gallery.

This December, the Guild will inaugurate its first "Under $200 Show" for members. To promote holiday sales, all works must be, as the name suggests, under $200. Up to 3 works may be submitted for a modest entry fee of $5 each. The Guild will receive 25% commission on sales. In addition, during the weekend of Dec. 7-9, we will offer tables for members who want to sell art and craft items that don't hang on the wall--notecards, jewelry, small sculpture pieces, craft items--for $30 for the 3 days. We'll have space for 20 artists, each of whom will have half of an 8-foot table to display his or her works. The Guild will take no commission on the table sales. As with the panels, table space will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Artists who rent tables must agree to "man" them during the weekend opening hours: Fri. 1-8 pm, Sat. 10-5, Sun. 1-5 pm.

Note that our next members' meeting, Tues. Sept. 18, will be a pot luck gathering at the Arts Center to kick off the fall season--casual dinner at 5:30 pm before a short meeting and video showing of China Images by Jan and Kathy Armor.

Please don't forget to send in your news, your awards and accomplishments, your free classified ads, ideas and comments. Send them to: info@PortsmouthArtsGuild.org . See you at the Arts Center!

--Eric Broudy, president
