Guild Ink ~ October 2007

"I cannot see that art is anything less than a way of making joys perpetual." --Rebecca West

From the President
On Sunday afternoon, Sept. 16, the Board of Directors of the Guild and a few guests gathered at the home of Barbara Lambert at a retreat to discuss some pressing issues that the Guild faces in the next year or two. These include such questions as how to get more visitors (read: art buyers!) into the gallery, how to ensure sustainability of the organization, and what kind of an arts guild do we want to see in five years. A former colleague of mine where I used to work at Brown U. refused to call such sessions "retreats." He called them "advances," which, he thought, more properly reflected the expected outcome. He had a point. So for four and a half hours that Sunday, a dozen of us chewed over a number of questions aimed at "advancing" the Arts Guild through the next couple of years. I mention this because as soon as the Board has an opportunity to digest the many ideas that the session produced and prioritizes those worth implementing, this publication will tell you all about it. Stay tuned, and stay involved. Your Arts Guild is going places.

And you can help get it there. The Guild is trying to build its mailing list to notify people interested in the arts of upcoming shows. (It's a simple idea: The more visitors in the gallery, the more sales!) You, as a Guild member, are our best resource for this. Send us the names and addresses (email addresses, too, if you have them) of 10 people you think would like to receive notices of Arts Guild shows. Send more if you have them. We will eliminate any duplicates. If 100 members each send us 10 names, we will have increased our list by 1,000 names! And they will be names of people we know are interested in the arts because you will have given them to us. Send these names right away, before you forget, to our mailing list manager, Phyliss Adams at phylmahoney@yahoo.com , or if you don't have email, send them to her at 4240 Main Rd., Tiverton, RI 02878.

Be sure to read in NEWS below the item on the Dec. 8 special art sale, because it's a change from what this letter described in the September newsletter. Note, too, the details on the December "Under $200" show. It's inexpensive to enter, with all artwork priced below $200 for holiday sales.

See the end of this newsletter for details on the October 16 members' program, in which Kendra Ferreira will demonstrate her colored pencil art techniques. You won't want to miss it. Furthermore, ..

.. Please don't forget to send in your news, your awards and accomplishments, your free classified ads, ideas and comments. Send them to: info@PortsmouthArtsGuild.org . Oh yes, I almost forgot ... a new art exhibition opens Friday, Oct. 5--"Judy Chaves and Artist Friends." Come to the reception, 6-8 pm. And tell your friends!

See you at the Arts Center!

--Eric Broudy, president

16 Printmakers Show sells art.
September was a good month for sales. Twelve works sold from the "16 Printmakers" show, the panels and art bin, with more promised, demonstrating that invitational shows bring new buyers into the Arts Guild gallery. Next September, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society will hang its members' works at the Guild, bringing yet another new group of artists and friends of the arts to Portsmouth.

**Save Dec. 8 for Special Art Sale! The September Guild Ink outlined Dec. 7-9 as a special 3-day weekend sale on rented table space for artists to sell small arts and artwork that doesn't hang on a wall, e.g., jewelry, notecards, ceramics, cork craft items, small sculptures, fiber and textile work, etc. That 3-day event has been changed to a one-day affair, Sat., Dec. 8, 10 am to 5 pm. Table space (half of an 8-foot table) can be rented for $20 and all sale proceeds go to the artist. No commission taken. The artist must be present to set up and sell his or her own work. Set up begins at 8:30 am. To reserve your space, Send your check for $20, payable to The Portsmouth Arts Guild, to P.O. Box 463, Portsmouth 02871, by Oct. 26. Include with your check a brief description of what you will be selling, so we can promote it to the media and various places in surrounding communities. Act now, as there are only 20 spaces available and they will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. If you've already replied by email, we still need your check to reserve your space. Thanks!

**Registration for 2008 Panel Rentals. Panels are still available for 2008, if you're interested. These standing panels are available to display your artwork during 2008, April through November. If you want a panel space, contact Libby Gilpatric, libbygilpatric@yahoo.com , 683-3448 or George Furbish, gafurbish@yahoo.com , 682-1879. The cost is $25/mo. for periods of 4 or 8 months.

will demonstrate her colored pencil art techniques. She says this about her work. "I work predominantly in colored pencil but also enjoy oil painting, watercolor and pastel. I often combine watercolor or pastel with colored pencil in my artwork. Colored pencil is my favorite medium because it allows me to combine the expressiveness of painting with the fine lines and detail of drawing. I'm a signature member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, and I have a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art. I'm also a member of the Providence Art Club, the Art League of Rhode Island, RI Watercolor Society and American Artists Professional League of NYC. Currently I serve as president of the New England Chapter of the Colored Pencil Society of America. My work has been honored by many awards from national and local art exhibits and I have taught colored pencil and watercolor classes locally. My work is shown at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport, Gallery 297 in Bristol and Donovan Gallery in Tiverton."
