NOVEMBER 2007 Member Newsletter

"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see." --Edgar Degas

From the President

With Halloween now behind us, you can now tell your friends and acquaintances "Only 30 Arts Guild shopping days left until Christmas!" Not only can they purchase the marvelous work juried into "H2O, a Show
About Water," but in December they can choose from a wide range of art for sale from members and non-members alike, all "Under $200." One of the best days for art shopping will be Saturday, Dec. 8, when some 15 members will supplement the "Under $200" show with 11 eight-foot tables filled with a variety of smaller art items for sale. A one-day special. Don't miss it.

The next day, Sunday, Dec. 9, is our first dramatic presentation in the church, followed by a reception in the gallery. Bring your friends and family to see and hear "A Christmas Memory," by Truman Capote,
performed by Trinity Rep veteran Barbara Blossom and All Children's Theater actor Jeremiah Allen. The performance starts at 3 pm, with reception at 4. Open to the public, no charge—an Arts Guild gift for
the holidays.

Libby Gilpatric has taken over "panel management" for 2008 from George Furbish. Thank you, George, for taking on that complicated task as we worked through the first year's challenging learning curve. You did a
great job! Panel renters, you can reach Libby at 683-3448, libbygilpatric@yahoo.com .

I'm delighted to report that Karen Talbot has agreed to become Guild Ink editor! Please send your news, accomplishments, items for the free Classifieds, etc. directly to her at: karentalbotart@gmail.com , 401-243-4168. She's looking forward to hearing from you. If you have trouble with the format of this newsletter, let Karen know.

Please don't forget to send 5-10 names to Phyliss Adams at phylmahoney@yahoo.com  to help build our mailing list. Only a few have done so thus far. Send her names—and email addresses if you have
them—of friends in the area who you think might want to be notified of Arts Guild shows. Your help is the best way to grow our mailing list and increase show attendance. Thanks.

The program for the November members' meeting will be an art critique, led by Izabella Casselman. See the note on the end of this newsletter for details.

See you at the Arts Center!

Taking Your Digital Camera On The Road
A Travel Photography Workshop with Jan Armor
There's two spots left for my next travel workshop, Saturday, November10th, at Portsmouth Arts Guild. It's so exciting to be out on the streets in some new place, with many strange and wonderful things
to see. This five hour workshop combines the art of travel photography with many technical tips and digital strategies that will help you make better pictures with your digital camera. We'll discuss the psychology
of  photographing the "natives." Good people pictures can make such a difference in your travel experience. We'll cover landscape and architectural photography and some tricks for making better than
average shots of tired old landmarks. Composition and lighting are important ingredients, so we address these elements throughout. Color, motion blur, and night photography are all included. You'll discover
how and why I like to give myself "theme assignments" on each and every trip. Technical issues and suggestions are woven throughout the day. We'll take a short trip to an old church and graveyard in "Ireland" and critique these images in the afternoon. In short, this workshop should
help you come away with great shots from your next trip, or even from
Providence, RI!
About your instructor:   Jan Armor is an award winning commercial and fine art photographer with sixteen years of experience with the digital medium, and many more using traditional silver based materials. He has
received grants for his environmental photography and taught at the Newport Art Museum. Jan leads digital workshops, and gives private lessons on Photoshop, Elements, Iview, Lightroom and The Digital
Workflow.
