DECEMBER 2007 GUILD INK
"To
create one's own world in any of the arts takes courage"--Georgia
O'Keeffe
/smaller>From the President/bigger>/fontfamily>
With Thanksgiving just behind us and the
December holidays just ahead, it's a good time to pause, reflect and
give thanks. The Portsmouth Arts Guild has a lot to be thankful for, and
here's the beginning of my own list: a great partnership with St. Paul's
Church that has enabled us to establish a permanent center for the arts
in town; a hard-working, dedicated Board of Directors who are real
hands-on managers as well as idea people, who set the course for the
Guild to follow; a host of loyal, wonderful volunteers who help hang
shows, create and distribute publicity materials, organize classes and
workshops, move panels around, edit a newsletter, run a gallery, and
inspire us all; and an amazing, growing membership of 180 artists and
art lovers of all types from all over Rhode Island and nearby
Massachusetts who exhibit their work, share their ideas, gallery sit,
come to meetings, participate in discussions, help paint our walls,
bring terrific food to receptions, help clean up, and even buy art! And
I mustn't forget the generous St. Paul's vestry, who support our
efforts, share our expenses, and actively promote our mission. I know
I'm forgetting so many things, but that's a pretty good start of a list,
and I'm thankful for all that's on it.
It's been a wonderful, challenging year, this first season in our new
home, and we've come a long way—10 different shows in as many months,
two sets of art classes, many new friends, and on Dec. 9, our first
performance art with Truman Capote's "A Christmas Memory" performed in
the church. This is also traditionally the time when many choose to
support their favorite charities by donating much-needed funds. I want
to urge you to add The Portsmouth Arts Guild to the group of non-profits
deserving of your philanthropy. They say charity begins at home. Well, I
hope as a member of The Portsmouth Arts Guild that you think of it as
your artistic home on Aquidneck Island, and thus, worthy of your
charitable gifts. If you don't, if we're not serving your artistic needs
or doing what you think matters for the arts in the area, please send me
an email, or give me a call, and let me know. This is your arts
organization. Please support it however you can. Send your fully
tax-deductible donation to P.O. Box 463, Portsmouth, RI 02871, then sit
back, have a glass of wine and feel good that you're supporting the arts
where you live.
Thanks, and don't forget to come to the "Under $200" show, as well as
the special events on Dec. 8th and 9th. Oh yes, and our Dec. 18th
members' meeting will be a holiday party (stay tuned for forthcoming
details) AND a demonstration/talk by painter and art teacher Trish
Hurley.
Be thankful, and make art! See you at the gallery!
Eric Broudy
A MESSAGE FOR ALL OF US /smaller>/fontfamily>
On Rejection from Juried Shows. The following
email was sent to one of our artist members whose work was rejected for
the November "H2O Show." I'm reprinting it here, slightly abridged,
because the writer, Priscilla Malone, has expressed more eloquently than
I ever could what I have often tried to tell various Guild members whose
work was not accepted into one of our juried shows. I read this at the
H2O opening, but it's a message that I believe those were not able to
attend might want to hear. --Eric
Oh _____,
I can sense the disappointment in your email in not having your piece
accepted into the show. I am so truly sorry - and can appreciate that
emotion, as i have had more of my paintings rejected then accepted in so
many juried shows. I used to take such rejections as failures.
Now, after years of such rejections ... along with acceptances and
awards, i toss it up to the temperament of the juror - not to any
inadequacy on my part as an artist. Rejections really sting.
Use that jolt to catapult your determinations into another level of
strength in your talents. When you are ready to go to the gallery and
see what is exhibited - take some time to see the selections. Observe
the exhibit at your leisure and assess the works for what they are.
Your work may not have been selected at this particular show, however,
your support to the Guild and fellow artists is so valued ... just as
your participation and contributions mean so much to each and every one
of us.
Never give up, never give in and always stay true to your own passions.
What you bring to the PAG is so special and something no
one else can bring because you are unique unto your Self; as your works
will testify. Rejection doesn't mean defeat; unless you allow
that. I had a 4th-grade teacher literally slash one of my drawings with
one of those huge red markers and in front of my entire class,
she bellowed i was a stupid, ignorant girl. I thought i would die and I
certainly never touched a crayon, pencil or paint brush for another
4 years. I hurt so much from the humiliation of rejection in a public
confrontation i nearly went mental from the experience. Then i
thought -- how dare she. All I did was make a drawing of a tree with
bright purple leaves and a golden yellow truck. SHE thought that tree
should have green leaves and a brown truck. Who was right. Neither of
us. Both of us. Who cares. AND!!! She had that lipstick smear
all across her front teeth!!! SO who was she to criticize my work of
art.... ?????? :) But i tell you, that moment of public humiliation
and rejection made me so strong - and i used that incidence as the
opening statement in my master's thesis report 18 yrs later. Every
person on the panel who read my thesis could identify with a similar
moment in their lives - moments that changed them forever - for the
better.
I babble! Stay strong. Keep up the good work!! I believe in you!

NEXT ARTS GUILD MEETING
/bigger>Tuesday, Dec. 18, 6:30 pm. Trish Hurley will
demonstrate painting using only a palette knife as her "brush."
"As a child, crayons were my love…using colors rich and vibrant, deep
and dark. Now as an adult, each color evokes an emotion within me that I
portray through my work. Each piece of art that I create has a special
ambience; in creating monoprints, it's a little more fun and
serendipitous whereas painting is a more direct and controlled process
often done with just palette knife and my fingers. There is a lot of
thought, exaggeration, and excitement as part of the process of my art
making."
Trish received her MFA in Painting from the University of
Massachusetts/Dartmouth and her BFA in Painting from the Swain School of
Design. A native New Englander she resides in Newport, Rhode Island.
Along with creating painting and monoprints in her studio, she instructs
fine art at the Community College of Rhode Island and at the Newport Art
Museum.
