From
the President
I'm pleased to report that not a penny of
Arts Guild funds was invested in Lehman Brothers
or AIG, or even passed through the hands of
Goldman, Sachs, Merrill, Lynch, Morgan or
Stanley. In these troubled financial times, it's
comforting to know that we are creating works of
lasting value that people can enjoy in their
homes or places of business for decades to come.
They won't disappear or lose their value because
of Wall St. greed or lack of federal regulation.
If there are any "derivatives" in our business,
it's the pleasures and satisfactions derived
from creating and experiencing our art. Artists
are creating value, not leaching from
it. Note this: On Saturday, Dec. 6, 11 am to
5 pm, we'll be having our second holiday "Table
Sale" for members who have smaller artworks or
crafts to sell for the holidays-items such as
notecards, jewelry, silk-screened items, small
sculptures, carvings, etc. that don't hang well
on walls. You can "rent" an eight-foot table for
$35 for the day with all sales going to the
artist; no commission to the Guild. There are
only 10 tables, and they will be allocated on a
first-come, first-served basis. So if you want a
table to display your wares on Saturday, Dec. 6,
send your check ASAP for $35 to The Portsmouth
Arts Guild, P.O. Box 463, 02871. Remember, there
are only 10 tables available, one to a customer.
As I write, the Rhode Island Watercolor
Society show is concluding and we are preparing
for the Juried Members' Exhibition, which opens
Thursday, Oct. 2, followed by a reception on
Friday, Oct. 3, f rom 6 to 8 pm. Bring your
friends. Speaking of exhibitions, one of our
photography members-Jerry Landay-has expressed
concern about our not scheduling an
all-photography show for 2009. Apparently, some
members favor an annual all-photo show, and some
don't. We'll discuss the pros and cons at our
Oct. 21 members' meeting. Members of the
Exhibition Committee will be present to consider
whether the 2009 exhibition schedule should be
changed. If you're interested in this topic, I
urge you to attend the meeting. And if that
topic doesn't interest you, I urge you to attend
anyway because, following that discussion,
Marilyn Moriarty will present an illustrated
lecture on "Mysteries of the Masters: Secrets,
Surprises and Stories Behind the
Paintings." And don't forget about the
Guild's fall class offerings. Check this
newsletter or the website for details. It's not
too late to sign up for Portrait and Figure
Drawing, Drawing I, Encaustic Paint and Support
Preparation, Preparing Images for Exhibition,
Drawing and Painting with Colored Pencil, and
The Business of Being an Artist. Remember,
the best publicity is word of mouth. Tell six
friends about the Guild's shows and classes.
Spread the word-The Portsmouth Arts Guild is the
place to come for beautifying your home and
enriching your soul.
See you at the
gallery!
