From the President
As I write this, two scary things are threatening my equanimity-Halloween and presidential elections. I suppose one could yell "Trick or Treat!" for both. At least with Halloween you kind of know what you'll get.
You also know what you get as a member of The Portsmouth Arts Guild. For example, see the 2009 Exhibitions schedule listed below. It begins, as usual, with a show of student artwork from area high schools, now shortened to 10 days, followed by the third non-juried Members' All-Media Exhibition.
Tables for our Dec. 6 Holiday Gift Gala Sale are all taken and will offer a range of small art items, jewelry, note cards and gifts for the holiday season. Come and bring your friends-Saturday, Dec. 6, 11 am to 5 pm. And don't forget that art intake for the Under $200 Holiday Show is Nov. 17 (3:30-6:30 pm) and Nov. 18 (6:30-8:30) pm. It's non-juried and you can enter two works--$10 for the first, $5 for the second. And if any sell, you can replace them at no charge. All Guild commissions from the Holiday Show will go to support the Eileen Gorton Shanley Scholarship Fund to assist graduating Portsmouth High School art students going on to study art in college.
Please note: Because art intake for the Holiday Show conflicts with the regularly scheduled November members' meeting, we are changing the members' meeting to Wed., Nov. 19, 7 pm, with social time beginning at 6:30. Digital photographer Michael Guertin will be discussing "Color and Composition in Fine Art Photography."
At its Oct. 30 meeting, the Portsmouth Town Council approved the membership of the new Portsmouth Arts and Culture Committee, which it established to explore the creation of a permanent center for the visual and performing arts for the region. If successful, this would mean a new home for The Portsmouth Arts Guild that would be ideally suited for exhibitions, art classes and meetings, as well as a space for the performing arts in a central location with good parking.
Committee members working on this project include the following: Eric Broudy, chair; Izabella Casselman, painter and mixed media artist, former co-chair of Portsmouth's Arts for Life Committee, PAG member; Malcolm (Mac) Chrupcala, musician, educator; Lois Erhartic, grant writer, business woman, artist, PAG member; George Furbish, PAG board member, painter, treasurer and chair of finance committee of Newport Art Museum; Janis Gordon, president of Jan Gordon Marketing International; Michael W. Miller, PAG board member, photographer, real estate attorney; Mark Nickel, director of university communications at Brown University, vice chair of the Providence Singers, PAG member; Tom Perrotti, manager of Common Fence Music; Laurie (Davidson) Spaner, actor, singer, director; Jill Wilson, art teacher, antiques and art dealer; Priscilla Wimpress, board member of Portsmouth Community Theater and Glen Manor House. Serving ex officio are Robert Driscoll, Portsmouth town administrator; Leonard Katzman, liaison to Portsmouth Town Council; and William Clark, Portsmouth director of business development.
Town Councilman Leonard Katzman sees the development of an Arts and Culture Center as a several-year project, if the committee recommends that the project is viable. I'll provide periodic updates as the work moves forward. In the meantime...
See you at the gallery!
~Eric Broudy

Editor's Request
My thanks to every one of you who sends me news about your well-deserved accomplishments and awards. I'm so happy to send them on to the rest of the members in each newsletter! My request is that along with your next item, please send a jpeg of your achievement.
Aside from being unable to attend all the events that members are involved in, I'd prefer to not stand on another wobbley chair at the Guild in order to get an image...I might fall on you!
Our fearless leader, Eric Broudy, captured this photo,
