From the
President
We're
approaching
the end of
our second
year in our
current
home. As I
write this
letter,
Thanksgiving
is just two
days away,
reminding me
that the
Arts Guild
has much to
be thankful
for, even
given how
the economy
is affecting
the arts. Or
maybe
particularly
given the
way the
economy is
affecting
the arts.
Permit me to
mention a
random
sampling--
Thanks to
St. Paul's
for its
ongoing
support of
our
partnership
and for its
commitment
to the Guild
and to the
arts in
Portsmouth.
Thanks to
the Town of
Portsmouth
itself for
its annual
civic grants
(three years
in a row) to
the Guild
and its new
commitment
to explore
developing
with us a
permanent
arts and
culture
center in
Portsmouth
for the
region.
Thanks to
our many
hard-working
volunteers-gallery
sitters,
committee
members and
chairs, the
board of
directors,
volunteer
show
installers
and
publicity
distributors-without
whom the
Guild would
simply go
out of
existence.
Thanks to
our
more-than-160
members for
their moral
and
financial
support, for
contributing
to our many
exhibitions,
and for
spreading
the word
about this
exciting and
growing art
association
on Aquidneck
Island.
Thanks to
our artists
who have
taught
classes and
helped to
get our
education
program up
and running.
Thanks to
those
members and
friends who
have given
demonstrations
and lectures
at our
monthly
meetings and
to our
interested
members who
continually
turn out to
hear them
and
participate
in
discussions.
And a
special
thanks to
our many
members who
have made
financial
contributions
this year
beyond their
member dues,
who
recognize
that when
the economy
is
struggling,
the arts
need support
more than
ever.
While the
Guild will
not offer
exhibitions
in January
and
February,
member
meetings
will
continue on
the third
Tuesday of
the month as
usual. Watch
for
announcements
of member
programs.
The December
16 program
will be a
holiday
party and
celebration
that we're
calling
"Just
Desserts."
Bring one to
share at the
meeting,
which will
feature a
DVD of
Sister Wendy
walking us
through the
galleries of
the Art
Institute of
Chicago. So,
have dinner
first and
come at 7 pm
for a
holiday
celebration
and your
"just
desserts."
(We'll
provide the
wine and
other
drinks!)
Don't
forget: Our
Gala Gallery
Sale is
Sat., Dec.
6, 11 am to
5 pm. Come
and bring
your
friends-10
large tables
of members'
creations
for holiday
gifts.
Jewelry,
notecards,
silk-screened
shirts,
photographs,
other gift
items. One
day only.
And
remember, as
you're
preparing
your list of
charitable
giving for
the end of
2008, please
include The
Portsmouth
Arts Guild
in your
plans.
Thank you. I
hope you had
a joyous
Thanksgiving.
See you at
the gallery!
