"Form is the outward expression of inner meaning." – Wassily

From the President
Ahh February, the month for hibernation and renewal, Super Bowls and
artistic goals, plans to lay and Groundhog Day. As you know, Groundhog
Day (Feb. 2) is when that little furry critter sticks his nose out of
his winter burrow after a long nap. If he sees his shadow, he scoots
back underground for another extended snooze. But if he sees no shadow,
that means it's probably a good day for photography, so he packs up his
digital SLR and heads out to the fields for a day of shooting. The next
day, Sunday, Feb. 3, if he's smart he heads to The Portsmouth Arts Guild
gallery at 2 pm to see the art demonstrations by the Guild's spring
class teachers. If you're as smart as that groundhog, you'll do the
same. Interesting art demos, free refreshments. Sign up for a class that
day and get 10% off the tuition.
On the expense side, we paid $14,609 in building expenses (insurance,
rent, electric, phone, heat, maintenance, repairs), $5,262 to mount
shows and programs (receptions, hanging expenses, judges' honoraria,
prizes, advertising, cards and fliers, postage, etc.), and $8,785 in
administrative expenses (website, newsletter, office supplies, p.o. box
rental, bank charges, etc.) In addition, we paid out $4,104 in fees to
our class teachers and some $8,520 to artists for sales of their
artwork. The bottom line for the year put us in the black with $7,378 in
income over expenses. Let me know if you have any questions, and thank
you to everyone who helped make 2007 such a stunning success.
And thank you to Toni Petersen, Don Heymann, and Libby Gilpatric who
showed up on Jan. 19 to help repaint our display panels and touch up the
gallery walls. You guys did a great job! It was all done in two hours.
We're now ready for the March "Artists' Choice" all-media, non-juried
Members' Show. See the calendar below for entry information. Intake of
work is on Feb. 25 and 26, and it'll be here before you know it. If you
renewed your membership before Dec. 31, don't forget to ask for ½ off
the entry fee!
PLEASE NOTE: We had to cancel the Feb. 19 Members' Meeting. The next
Members' Meeting will be Tues., March 18, during which mosaic artist
Nicole Bertoline will demonstrate and talk about her work.
Remember, be as smart as the groundhog—come to the Feb. 3 art

Barrington Public Library. Fine Art and Landscape Photography of
Dan Connolly. March 1- March 31, 2008. You're invited to view the
landscape and fine art photography of Dan Connolly during the month of
March, 2008, at the Barrington (RI) Public Library. Dan Connolly's
images are unique expressions of singular places and moments in time: a
pre-sunrise morning deep in the woods near a flowing cascade, dusk
settling on a pebbled beach on Narragansett Bay. Dan relies on long
exposures and composition simplification to soothe the often-chaotic
scenes, and to draw the viewer into a new appreciation of common sights.
Long exposures soften disparate movements, inherent in water
particularly, and composing carefully eliminates distractions and
distills the scene into its essential components, allowing the viewer
immediate access to the most powerful elements of the scene. This
simplification leads to an ease of perception and amplified access to
feeling and emotion in the viewer. The juxtaposition of rock and water
in many of his images brings together two of the formative elements of
the earth's structure, one shaping the other. There will be
approximately 17 images on display. Works displayed will include
selections from the project, "Diana's Baths," an exploration of rock and
water, hardness and softness, shadow and light, in the woods of the
White Mountains of New Hampshire, as well as images from Rhode Island's
East Bay. Library Hours: Monday - Thursday, 9a.m. - 9p.m. Friday and
Saturday, 9a.m. - 5p.m. Sunday, 1p.m. - 5p.m.
