"Art is love made visible." ~Mark Wholey

From the President

Ahh May, when a young person's heart turns to ---  ART! Same with older persons, actually. Forget about baseball-it's time to get outdoors and paint, and photograph, sculp, weave, pot, dance, whatever it is you do to express yourself. Start creating the work you will submit to our "Portraits & Figures" show in June. Interpret that theme any way you like. The show will be juried by RISD artist and teacher Robin Wiseman. See entry details below.

This month it's the Eileen Gorton Shanley retrospective, "An Interrupted Journey," with an opening reception Sunday, May 4, 2-4 pm. Come and bring your friends!

Your Arts Guild is growing in strength and expertise. We've added two new members to the Board to fill vacancies-mixed-media artist and former president of the Greater Fall River Art Association JP (John Paul) Fernandes, and jewelry artist Mary Ann Martin. If you don't know the other 14 board members and never checked the website to find out, here they are: Tracy Anthony, manager of Clements Market; Jan Armor, photographer and Guild VP; Anne Winthrop Cordin, painter and chair of our Exhibition Committee; Wendy Crooks, painter; George Furbish, painter; Libby Gilpatric, painter and manager of our Resident Artist program; Barbara Lambert, painter and Guild secretary; Michael S. Mendell, photographer and Guild treasurer; Linda Remington, painter and St. Paul's junior warden; Kathy Parker, painter and our web manager; Lyle Rudloff, sculptor; Felicia Touhey, painter and chair of our program committee; Sally von Weiffenbach, painter; and moi, photographer and president.

But that's not all who we have working for the Guild. Let's give credit (and many thanks!) where it's due. First, our publicity committee: Barbara Ney, Nancy Isherwood and Laura Collins handle all our postcard mailings, press releases, and organization of flyer distribution. Elena Obelenus designs the cards, and a host of others take those flyers and cards and place them in key sites throughout the area-people like Len deAngelis, John Beekley, Rita Honnen, Carole Barboza, Dan Connolly, Wendy Crooks, Jay Egge, Sylvia Hampton, Carol Lynn Hall, Dawn Sanford, and Edwina Sebest. And of course there's Karen Talbot who designs and edits Guild Ink, your monthly newsletter.

The committee that brings you art classes and workshops is chaired by Dawn Sanford with Edwina Sebest as registrar and includes Kathy Armor, Linda Bianco, Mary Ann Martin, Jay Egge, Lois Marshall, Nicole Bertoline Weeks, and Andy Pumphrey.

Membership is chaired by Phyllis Adams, assisted by Nicholas Stephens. And I can't forget all those who show up to help hang our many exhibitions-members like Norm Petersen, John Forasté, Lyle Rudloff, Allayne Boruch, Jane Renwick, Libby Gilpatric, Jan Armor, Felicia Touhey, Izabella Casselman, Don Heymann. And our 18 Resident Artists and other members, too numerous to mention, who gallery sit during gallery hours or who, like John and Sandra Tolley and Priscilla Malone, help out at art intakes openings. Thanks also to Sandra Dingée who has volunteered to help maintain the little island garden this summer in front of the arts center.
Don't see your name here? Then either I've inadvertantly overlooked it (a serious risk when thanking people this way), for which I humbly apologize, or you haven't yet pitched in to help out. If you haven't, and you'd like to, please let me know.

Meanwhile, don't forget that our next members' meeting (Tuesday, May 20, 6:30 pm at the Guild Center for the Arts) will feature Dora Atwater Millikin, a wonderful painter who will discuss the work in her one-person show coming up at the Newport Art Museum.

See you at the gallery!
