From the President
Your Arts Guild continues to make great strides. Last month, a record 37 works of art sold from the Shanley Retrospective, "An Unfinished Journey." The Guild's commissions from that show doubled the Eileen Gorton Shanley Scholarship Fund (now totaling over $2,000), enabling us to offer the first scholarship award of $200 this month to a graduating Portsmouth High School senior. The first recipient is Meredith Fitzgerald, selected by PHS art teachers, who will study art next year at the Rochester Institute of Technology. In addition to the Shanley sales, six other works sold from the panels and display cases in May. It's heartening to see that even with gas at $4.00 a gallon, people are still buying art!
The current show, "Here's Looking at You: Portraits and Figures," is terrific and I urge you to see it. It's wonderfully diverse in its interpretations of the theme. RISD juror Robin Wiseman awarded First Prize to Judy Chaves for her "Self Portrait" in oil. Second Prize went to Eric Hovermale for his digital photograph, "Repose," and Third Prize was awarded to Jillian Barber for her remarkable clay sculpture, "Chrysanthemum." Both Chaves and Hovermale are Arts Guild members. Honorable Mentions were awarded to Priscilla Malone, JP Fernandes, Jan Armor, Libby Gilpatric, Phyllis Adams, Jillian Barber, Jill McLaughlin, and Liliya Krys-all Guild members except for the last three. The juror's comments on why he selected those works for awards are posted next to the winning entries.
We received 132 entries from 66 area artists. Sixty-eight works by 45 artists were accepted for exhibition. There was so much great work entered, I only wish we had the space to exhibit more of it! Many thanks to all who entered. And special thanks to those who helped hang the show-Anne Winthrop Cordin, John Forasté, Allayne Boruch and Libby Gilpatric.
The second-prize winner, Eric Hovermale, incidentally, will be the speaker at our June 17 members' meeting. His figure studies are primarily explorations of movement, form, and light. Both his figure studies and his portraits, he states, attempt to express the human spirit, as well as the external form of his subjects. "In my images, I am attempting to use a visual language to create the same impact as a good poem," Hovermale says. "I try to edit out the extraneous and to retain the essence." If you're missing the member meetings, you're missing one of the great benefits of Guild membership. The discussions and presentations this year have been fabulous. (Thank you, Felicia Touhey, for arranging them!)
See you at the gallery!

During the month of June, Deblois will feature an exciting collection of works of several area artists. Middletown artist, Catherine VanLancker, will display a collection of her recent oil paintings which, in her words, are "an attempt to reduce complex landscapes to geometric compositions in vivid bands of color and light while still retaining the essence of the landscape". Exhibiting artist Rodie Siegler, also from Middletown, is widely known for her sculpture. However, for this show she will exhibit her striking collection of photographs known as the Rorshach series. These mirror-image photographs of water reflections have resulted in abstractions that challenge viewers "to find their own images" within them as they learn about themselves in the process. Clay sculptures and vessels produced by The Warren Clay Works will complete the exhibit. This group, which consists of many award-winning, professional sculptors meets weekly to share workspace and inspire one another. Exhibiting members of The Warren Clay Works include: Martha Antaya, Ellen Blomgren, Izabella Casselman, Karen Dionne, Judi Israel, Allison Newsome, Cathy Scanlan, Valorie Sheehan and Rodie Siegler. Newport Art Museum. Donning her paint-spattered coat during the PAG artist talk in May, she absorbed us with her painterly perceptions about her work and talked fondly about growing up in Little Compton. No doubt her early awareness influenced the images in her paintings. "Dora Atwater Millikin: Geometry of Place". June 7 - August 10. Reception: June 12, 5 - 7pm (Newport Gallery Night). Gallery Talk: July 10, 5:30pm (Newport Gallery Night). Painter Dora Atwater Millikin sees patterns everywhere: in telephone poles marching like soldiers to the horizon and in the scalloping wires connecting them that sway overhead; patterns in light and shadow, on bridge trusses, and in a line of boats at moorings just offshore. Millikin delivers such scenes painted in and around Newport, but her renderings are far from romantic depictions of the "City by the Sea" and its environs."I am always searching for ways to deliver the unexpected to my viewer," says the artist. "I enjoy rendering potentially unpicturesque motifs and everyday objects and scenes in my life. I wish to present my world as it looks today without the nostalgia and sentimentality attached to past times."
