From the President

Welcome to summer!

This month the Guild is offering another valuable benefit of membership. If you don't have your own website and would like to have your artwork displayed on the Portsmouth Arts Guild website, read on.  For $10 for the rest of this year, the Guild will display up to 16 images of your artwork in a new Members' Gallery on our website, www.PortsmouthArtsGuild.org. Next year, the cost will be $20 per year for the service, payable when you renew your membership in January. But for just $10, you now have an opportunity to get your feet wet with displaying your work in cyberspace for the rest of 2008. Details of this program are listed below in the News section. Check it out.

It's July, which means another great show is on display. This Thursday eve (July 3), the "Toujours l'Amour" show opens at the gallery. Come to the opening to see who won Honorable Mentions and cash prizes ($100 for 1st, $50 for 2nd, $25 for 3rd.) And speaking of shows, the Exhibition Committee, chaired by Anne Winthrop Cordin, has met to consider all the suggestions that members emailed for next year's shows. Here's how it's shaping up for 2009, with certain details still to be confirmed:

Jan. and Feb.: Gallery closed except for classes and meetings.
March 1-8: 3rd Annual Student Exhibition (area high school students)
Mar. 12-Apr. 5: Annual Members' Show (non-juried)
Apr. 9-May 3: Works on Paper (any artwork produced on paper, open, juried)
May 7-31: Four-Artist Invitational (participants TBA)
June 4-28: Imagine Yellow (open, juried)
July 2-26: Summer in Rhode Island (open, juried)
July 30-Aug. 23: Abstractions II (open, juried)
Aug. 27-Sept. 27.: Pastel Society of Cape Cod (invitation pending)
Oct. 1-Nov. 15: Annual Juried Members' Show
Nov. 19-Dec. 20: 2nd Annual Under $200 Show
Dec. 6 (Sat.): 2nd Annual Arts and Artisan Table Sale, 11 am to 5 pm.

Listening to your suggestions, the committee made the following changes for 2009: more "saleable" themes for the April through August shows, a shorter student show, an additional show made possibly by shortening the student show, and adding a small group show. Cash prizes will be given at all juried shows.

The Education Committee has been hard at work establishing a curriculum of fall classes, beginning in mid-October. Watch for them in next month's newsletter and on the website. Meanwhile, stay cool, support your Arts Guild, and have a productive, artistic summer.

The July 15 members meeting will feature artist Marilyn Moriarty doing a watercolor demonstration on rice paper. Everyone will be able to participate and materials will be provided. Marilyn is a founder and past president of the Arts Guild.

See you at the gallery!

DeBlois Gallery. 138 Bellevue Ave., Newport. "Patterns", the new exhibit at Deblois, was inspired by the life experiences, observations and memories of painter Joan DeRugeris and ceramic sculptor John DiCicco. In her work, DeRugeris takes what she sees and then breaks down the elements into a pattern and design whole. At the same time, she is very aware of the manner in which patterns, forms, color and texture relate to one another. For this exhibit, her paintings of landscapes and seascapes range from the mythical to the abstract. Inspired by his travels, and in fact "driven" by his life DiCiccoCrowdedPathexperiences, DiCicco views his sculptural container forms as a "metaphor for how our minds hold our memories". He makes extensive use of the figure as part of the over-all pattern on the surface of his work as he relates the image placement to the chapters and cycles in life. He will exhibit new work which includes both decorated stoneware containers and clay monoprints. Show: July 5-July 29. Opening Reception: Saturday, July 5, 5-7pm. balancing the tides - a newport journal: Volume IV 2008. The 4th arts and literary issue documenting the connection of architecture and neighborhoods in the coastal communities of Rhode Island was celebrated at Bowen's Wharf, Saturday, June 19. Publisher Trixie Wadson asked, "Holidaymakers and voyagers have been arriving on our coastlines for generations, drawn by good sailing, meandering walks, by pleasures simple and splendid. But where do the weary and the revelers rest their heads at night and into the wee hours of the morning? And for those who call Newport County home, what structures hold us, and which do we hold dear? Who have been and are today the architects of our residences, and thus our lives?" Her question was answered through essays, stories, art, and illustrations by writers and artists of what Thornton Wilder in Theophilus North called, the "nine cities of Newport".

Display Your Artwork on The Portsmouth Arts Guild Website. Ya-a-ay! Woo-Hoo! This is a great opportunity for all members! ...Ahem...back to the news...
If you don't already have your own website, for $20 a year you can have up to 16 images of your artwork posted in a new Members' Web Gallery on the Portsmouth Arts Guild website. It's only $10 for the remainder of this year, beginning in July.
To rent space on a virtual gallery at the Portsmouth Arts Guild for the remainder of 2009:
Send $10 (checks only, payable to Portsmouth Arts Guild, c/o Jan Armor, 48 Seal Island Rd., Bristol, RI 02809) and a CD of 10-16 images and Jan Armor will create your own web gallery on the Portsmouth Arts Guild site. Or email your jpegs or tiffs, a few at a time (no thumbnails), to Jan at jandarmor@fctvplus.net. No PDF files.  The ideal size is about 10 inches on the long side, which should be about 10" x 72 pixels per inch = 720 ppi. So a 10" x 8" photo, scanned at 72 dpi, is fine. Send images and check by July 15.
If you want your pictures titled, please do it yourself as follows: Sunset.jpg, or Castle Hill Light.tiff. Keep the title short!
Jan will post your email address within your gallery, so visitors can contact you about your beautiful work.
Once your gallery is up, you cannot change the images again this year. You can change your images twice a calendar year. The next change would be in Jan. 2009 when you renew your Arts Guild membership, and then again in July 2009. (Gallery renewal in Jan. 2009 will cost $20 for the year, in addition to your Guild membership dues.)
Visitors will find a special page on our Guild website that alphabetically lists all the artists who have a gallery. They will also be listed in our newsletter, Guild Ink.
To view a sample gallery that Jan has created, go to:
http://www.armorphoto.com/gilpatric/index.html (The real address, when the gallery is launched, will actually be www.portsmouthartsguild.org/gilpatric/index.html  with your name where Gilpatric's is in the sample.) Finally, you will be able to direct clients straight to your gallery using this link. Contact Jan for further information at: 401-253-4237,

Portsmouth Breast Cancer Fundraiser Seeks Artist Volunteers. On October 3, 4 and 5, thousands of women and men will unite and walk 60 miles through Washington, D.C. The Breast Cancer 3-Day is a weekend of hope, as we honor lives lost, celebrate survivors, promote breast cancer research and help bring breast cancer care to those who so desperately need it. Net proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day benefits both Susan G. Komen for the Cure --funding breast cancer research, education, screening and treatment programs-- and The National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund, which provides an endowment for breast cancer initiatives. Portsmouth CPA Louann Lawrence, together with several other local women have committed to walk the Breast Cancer 3-Day. They have set a goal of raising over $10,000. To help reach that goal, they  will be hosting the "Lyrics For Life" fundraiser at Glen Parkon August 24, 2008. The day will be a family festival of music and showcase incredible local performers. It will include a cookout for all attendees. There will be raffles, a memory wall (that will come with us to Washington), as well as a lot of laughter and a lot of tears. Since the festival will be a family event, organizers would love to offer some children's activities, including an art table to add to the family fun. If you would be interested in providing some fun kids art activities, please contact PAG member Lois Erhartic at sandcastles96@aol.com or 401-683-2598 for more information. Monetary donations, recommendations for musical acts, and other volunteer offers are also being gratefully accepted.

And how thrilling it is to find that a new technique has synthesized into improving our individual practice! Support the PAG Summer Classes 2008 by either taking one or encouraging your friends to take a class or two. This is one of those times that bragging - about what excellent teachers our colleagues are - is appropriate and encouraged!

This surface will be varnished when completed and presented like a painting. Drawing papers, drawing boards, pastel ground and spray varnish will be provided.
Instructor: Kendra Ferreira has a B.A. in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. Instructor: Mandy Howe attended Boston University, The School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Lyndon State College, VT. She is an art teacher at Pennfield School. Her work has been in many exhibitions and juried shows throughout RI and VT. She has designed and directed art programs

Students will also learn how to mix egg tempura and paint images with this material. An $85 material fee will provide wood blocks, paint brushes and pallets, pigments and some gold leaf. Both beginner and
experienced painters are welcome.
