From the President
Our 2nd Annual "Only Photography" show opened today (July 31) and, I have to say, it's pretty wonderful, even without one of my own photographs in it. The juror, Newport photographer Alexander Nesbitt, selected 71 works out of 116 submitted. It was an open show, and I'm pleased to report that all three cash prizes were won by Portsmouth Arts Guild members. Michael Miller took First and Third Prizes, and John Forasté won Second Prize. Seven Honorable Mentions were also awarded, and six of the seven also went to Arts Guild members (Jan Armor, Jillian Barber, Lenny Rumpler, Eric Hovermale, and Michael Guertin). Congratulations to our talented Guild members, and many thanks to John Forasté and Eric Hovermale who helped hang the show! The 2nd Annual will also be the last Annual "Only Photography" show. A number of people questioned why we offered a month's show only to photographers when we didn't do that for watercolorists, oil painters, printmakers, etc., especially since photographers could enter works in most of our other shows. The point was well taken; so while we may again offer an Only Photography show, it won't be next year, and it certainly won't be annual. Thanks to those who gave that useful feedback to the Exhibition Committee. Sales this summer have been slow at the gallery, and various pundits attribute that to soaring gas prices and a miserable economic outlook in general. Other galleries are reporting similar results. However, you can help get more potential art buyers into our gallery, and here's how: Write down 10 names and addresses (including email if you have it) of friends or acquaintances of yours who you think are potential art buyers or appreciators. Then email them to Phyllis Adams to add to our mailing list. We need to build up our mailing list with "good" prospects-if not buyers then at least people who value art and can spread the word about the excellent shows we are mounting. Phyllis Adams, our membership chair, currently maintains our mailing lists, and you can send those names to her at: phylmahoney@yahoo.com. Word of mouth is one of the best ways to promote our shows and sell your fabulous artwork that's on display. Do it today before you forget. Thanks for your cooperation in this effort. If all our members send 10 names, we'll increase our list by 1,500 people! Many hands make great work. Or, to paraphrase a well-known political savant, It takes a village to create a successful art association. I know it's been unseasonably hot, but come see the Photography exhibition to see some very "cool" work. You'll be glad you did.
See you at the gallery!
