"It's only when you hitch your wagon to something larger than yourself that you will realize your true potential." ~Barack Obama

From the President
On January 20 a fresh breeze blew across this great nation, and carried on that breeze was new hope for the arts. I'm sure you've read the same articles I have, indicating that the Obama administration is arts-friendly. There have even been whisperings that some of the megabucks that is being pumped back into the economy from D.C. might go to support the arts, as well as the highways and bridges ... and banks. Not to worry-the Portsmouth Arts Guild is not looking for a federal bailout, nor does it need one. However, to paraphrase a remark by former GM head Charles Wilson, What's good for General Arts is good for the country. Whether any of those funds trickle down to the arts in Portsmouth almost doesn't matter. What does matter is the recognition at the federal and state levels that the arts are as important for this nation to support as the rest of its infrastructure. Even given the dire state of the economy, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the melting of the icecaps, the bizarre struggles of Carolyn Kennedy and (dare I couple them in the same sentence?) Rod Blagojevich, one can smell the freshness and vitality in the air. And in the immortal words of our 43rd President, I can only say, Bring 'em on! You'll be interested to know that the Arts Guild board and managing committee will be meeting this month in a half-day "visioning retreat." The purpose is to take stock of where we are now as an organization and lay out a vision of where we'd like to be-what we'd like to be-in three to five years. I'll report on that discussion in the March Guild Ink. I regret to report that, due to last-minute scheduling conflicts of several of our instructors, we had to cancel the Feb. 1 Art-o-Rama event. However, the roster of Spring Classes is now posted on our website. Check them out at www.PortsmouthArtsGuild.org; they start in March. Speaking of March, March 1 is the deadline for those who have work in the Members' Gallery to remit their $20 to remain in the web gallery for 2009. Please send your check to P.O. Box 463 so we don't have to remove your work from our website. And if your work is not yet on the web and you'd like it to be, take a look at our Members' Gallery. For $20, you can have up to 16 images of your artwork on display for the world to admire ... and perhaps purchase. Jan Armor will upload your images, no fuss, no muss. Email him at jandarmor@fctvplus.net for details. And speaking of February, our Feb. 17 members' meeting program will feature Newport artist, and Arts Guild member, Richard Grosvenor, who will demonstrate his painting technique and discuss his work. Richard had a special one-person show at the Newport Art Museum last year and exhibits widely. His art demonstrations are hugely popular. Don't miss it. Finally, on Saturday, Feb. 21, a group of Guild members will gather to do some touch-up painting of our gallery walls and panels. If you have time, drop by and help out. Brushes and paint provided. Time is 9 am until 11 am or so. It shouldn't take long. Thanks and ...
See you at the gallery!
