From the President
First things first: Eight volunteers showed up on Saturday, Feb. 21, to help with touch-up painting of our gallery walls and exhibition panels. Those wonderful people are Carol Gates, Mary Ann Martin, Rita and Don Heymann, Jane Renwick, Christine McCoy, Linda Remington, and JP Fernandes. Thank you one and all!
The gallery is undergoing some other improvements-additional exterior lighting, lights on our Guild sign, additional electrical outlets in the gallery itself, an upgraded electrical panel from 60 to 100 amps-all important for evening openings, safer parking and walkways. As with our other gallery improvements, expenses are shared with our generous partner, St. Paul's.
We begin the 2009 exhibition year this week with "Emerging Artists III", our annual show of area high school art students' work. The opening reception is this Sunday, March 1, 2-4pm. The work is remarkable and will be on display only until March 8. Do yourself a favor and check it out. And thanks to Jamie Ferris, P.H.S. senior art student who helped with the intake, labeling and hanging of the work. As part of her senior art project, Jamie has been working with the Guild this winter to learn how a gallery operates.
And don't forget to enter your own work on March 9 or 10 for the "Annual Members Only All-Media Exhibition." The opening reception is Sunday, March 15, 2-4 pm. Drop-off times for your work is 3-6 pm on the 9th and 6:30-8:30 pm on the 10th. If you haven't yet renewed your membership for 2009, you can do it when you drop off your work for the show.
I'm pleased to announce that Lois Erhartic is the new chair of an expanded Member Programs and Events Committee. In addition to lectures and demonstrations at our monthly member meetings, Lois will be developing other ideas and activities of interest for members seeking greater community and shared interests in the Guild. If you have ideas that you'd like to see implemented, contact Lois at brushdance2008@gmail.com, 401-683-2598.
At the March 17 members' meeting, Jonathan Small will present an illustrated talk about 19th-century engraving and etching as seen through the eyes of Jon's relative, Stephen Alonzo Schoff (1818-1904). Schoff was a prominent engraver who crossed paths with many figures of American Art of that time. (Those who attended the February meeting watched Newport artist Richard Grosvenor demonstrate the painting of both a watercolor and oil seascape in a fascinating hour's performance. See photos in this issue.)
We still need a few gallery sitters for April, May and June-particularly for Saturdays and Sundays. If you can do it, please call or email Libby Gilpatric, 401-683-3448, libbygilpatric@yahoo.com.
Thanks and ...
See you at the gallery!

Priscilla Malone. Having received the 1st Place award in the Conanicut Island Art Association's February show, "Watercolors Galore" with her watercolor painting, "Life's A Beach", Priscilla and her craftsman husband Tom were also awarded the commission to create all new stained glass windows for the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church in Pawtucket, RI. Priscilla's artist renderings of more than 400sqft of stained glass windows incorporated selected icons of Greek saints & symbols to be hand-painted and fired into a contemporary, geometric background won over the hearts of the committees and parish members. "I delicately painted the faces of every saint using specialized glass pigment onto antique European, flesh-tinted glass. The same was done with the Greek symbols and adorations throughout the windows", Priscilla says. The windows will be executed in the team's stained glass studio, Malone Studio, Inc., in Portsmouth, RI. In October, Priscilla's watercolor, "The Potter & the Pear", was exhibited in the ALRI Artist Members Exhibit at the Bristol Art Museum. In addition to being an artist member of PAG, she is also an artist member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the Art league of Rhode Island, member of Spring Bull Gallery in Newport and Associate Member of the National Watercolor Society.
