"The humble nature of paper chimes with a renewed interest in the
integrity of low-tech materials that convey honesty rather than
deception." ~Kate Mcfarlane, Curator and Co-Director of The Drawing Room, London

From the President
First the
good news: The National Endowment for the Arts is giving the Portsmouth
Arts Guild $50,000 in stimulus funds. (Ha ha, April Fool! Would that
were the case, but NEA stimulus funds are earmarked for saving or restoring
jobs at organizations who have a history of receiving grants from NEA
in the past. We don't qualify.) Well, we have some equally good news.
The Annual Members All-Media Show last month attracted 152 works from
75 Arts Guild members for our largest exhibition to date. Kudos to Jonathan
Small and John Forasté, who hung the show in seven long hours, to P.
Jane Renwick who stayed up until midnight making the labels, and to
Janet Dassau, Mary Ann Martin, Sandra Tolley and our Portsmouth High
School art student intern Jamie Ferris who handled the intake of the
record number of art works. Whew, and thank you, too, to all who brought
refreshments for the opening. Our Guild only works because of you.
A People's
Choice contest for best work ran through the month, and, more good news,
we have a tie for both first and second places. First Place winners
were Bill Gagne for his photograph "Seward AK on Canvas" and Christine
McCoy for her oil painting "Zack in P-town." Second Place winners
were Libby Gilpatric for her oil painting "August Power" and Rita
Honnen for her acrylic collage "Waterfall." Congratulations to all
four winners! Next up is
"Works on Paper," April 9 to May 3, with an opening reception on
Friday, April 17, 6-8 pm. Be sure to attend. Don't forget: Drop-off
dates for that juried show are Monday, April 6, 3-6 pm, and Tuesday,
April 7, 6:30-8:30 pm. As with all our juried shows, cash prizes
will go to the top 3 winners. In February,
I mentioned that the board and managing committee was holding a "visioning
retreat," and I'd be reporting on the outcome. I want you to know
that the retreat was productive in helping us to articulate a vision
for the future of the Arts Guild, and an ad hoc subcommittee is now
at work developing plans to help us fully realize that vision. The vision
looks something like this: A vibrant arts center for all ages with
ample gallery space, studios, classrooms, performance space
... even a coffee shop. A friendly and non-intimidating atmosphere,
uniting the community with socializing, culture, entertainment, education
and art of all varieties. A bustling center that fosters collaboration
with other arts associations; an arts and culture focal point for the
region. The Center
would offer classes for students of all ages, on-going exhibitions,
regular performances of a wide variety of artistic expression, after-school
art classes and mentoring for students, a variety of lectures, demonstrations
and other related programs for members and the community. It will exhibit
works both indoors and out, have a
sculpture garden, and will become the
"go-to" place for the arts in the region. Impossible
you say? How does that old expression go? ...The difficult we can do
right away; the impossible takes a little longer. It's an exciting
vision and a challenging one, and we have some obstacles to overcome.
Some of that vision is already a part of who we are, some can be achieved
quite soon, and some (the "impossible" parts) will take a little
longer. You'll be hearing more on this subject as the ad hoc planning
committee continues its work. At various points along the way, you will
be called on to help. I hope you agree that the vision is worth our
striving to achieve. In the meantime,
don't miss Marian O'Connell's talk at the April 21 members'
meeting. Her extraordinary work won Best in Show at the Newport Art
Museum members' exhibition. Marian will speak about her work and her
development as an artist. (If you missed the March meeting, you missed
a truly remarkable presentation by Jonathan Small ... not to mention
Lois Erhartic's home-made sugar cookies and Irish coffee!)
Thanks and ... See you at the gallery!

Sustaining the Arts in Rhode Island
Arts Advocacy Day: April 21, 2-5pm
In 2008, RI Citizens for the Arts embarked on creating the first ever multi-year policy and visionary strategy toward a sustainable arts sector. Over the course of a year, we analyzed the sector and gathered the collective thoughts from a broad range of artists, business and civic leaders, education officials and legislators. The result is the vision and strategy built around the following four strategies:
1. Recognize and strengthen the arts as a significant industry sector and natural resource in the State of Rhode Island that adds qualitative and quantitative value. 2. Demonstrate the arts' role in improving communities. 3. Create a sustainable funding model for investment in the state's creative sector. 4. Strengthen the ability of artists and arts organizations to fulfill their missions.
Join fellow Rhode Island artists in telling legislators why the arts are important for your community. Advocate for the arts at the State House in Providence by speaking with legislators on April 21 from 2 to 5pm.
"The arts help Rhode Island stand out in a crowd."
