From the President
Vacations
are notable not only for what you did while you were away, but for what
you missed by leaving town. Regrettably, last month I had the
misfortune to miss both the opening of the "Works on Paper" show, with
live guitar entertainment by member Don Heymann (thanks, Don!), as well
as the members' meeting presentation by Newport Art Museum award winner
Marian O'Connell. I hope you had better luck and caught at least one
of those two special events. I was particularly
unhappy to miss the "Works on Paper" opening since, for the first time,
one of my photographs won First Prize (blush). Second was taken by Steve
Zuelhke for his pastel "Morning Light", and Third went to Judy Chaves
for her pastel "The Old Barn". Honorable Mentions were earned by
Libby Gilpatric ("Violet", watercolor), Timothy Revello ("Technology
Refresh", photograph), Marcia Zuelhke "Morning Sun on Old
Barn", Denise Zompa ("Tree in Yellow and Purple", oil on paper),
and Jillian Barber ("Sanctuary", colored pencil drawing on photocopy).
Congratulations to all winners! It's a great show, and if you haven't
seen it, you too will have something to regret. (It comes down May 3.)
Next up is
the "4-Artist Invitational" opening on Friday, May 8, 6-8 pm, with Peter
Hussey's watercolors, Bob Reichley's photography, Mike Hansel's
sculptures and Shawn Kenney's paintings. All of them (I hope) will
be discussing their work at the May 19 members' meeting, so mark your
calendars now.
Our relatively
new Performing Arts Committee, chaired by Guild V.P. JP Fernandes, has
been quietly working this winter and spring to prepare a monthly series
of varied performances beginning this September. The first event is
a Sept. 27 concert by the Superchief Trio, winners of Best Local Jazz
Act (2005) by Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll and Motif Magazine's
Best Local Release (2006). Check out Superchief's work on their website, www.superchieftrio.com. Other planned performances include
a chamber concert by the Providence String Quartet, story telling by
Katie Latimer, a December puppet show, and possibly a modern dance performance
and Brazilian jazz concert later in the winter. (Some of these may be
subject to change.) Most performances will take place in the 120-seat
St. Paul's church with reception in the art gallery. Stay tuned and
watch our website for details.
Meanwhile,
get working on your entries for our "Imagine Yellow" juried show in June!
Drop-off dates are June 1 and 2.
Thanks and ... See you at the gallery!

Sustaining the Arts in Rhode Island
Arts Advocacy Day 2009: Aftermath The day was windy and chilly with intermittent fits of rain, but over 70 arts advocates from all over the state wrapped their cloaks tightly about themselves in order to gather in the Governor's Room at the State House on Tuesday, April 21. We learned not only why the arts are important to the quality of life in our state but, in these financially tenuous times, why the arts must remain as part of the state budget for the benefit of our economic health.
Let me arm you with just a few cool statistics: ...for every $1 the state invests in the arts, $21 is generated in matching funds ...Providence alone generates $111.8 million in economic revenue ...the arts in RI generate more than $750 million in economic revenue for the state ...the arts employ close to 12,000 people in Rhode Island ...proficiency in the arts - by the time a child graduates from high school in RI - is an unfunded mandate
According to Lisa Carnevale and RI Citizens for the Arts, we are among a small group that produces the quality of life our state offers, and we are catching the eye of businesses who need our innovation and imagination. Innovation and imagination are what businesses want. A recent study of the Conference Board (a leading national business organization) found that 96% of corporate respondents said that creative thinking, innovation, and problem solving are among the most desired skills in the 21st Century workforce - skills proven to be developed by the arts. Here's the kicker, PAG folks: from the same national corporate respondents who said that "creativity is of increasing importance in the U.S. workforce", 85% said they cannot find qualified applicants with the creative characteristics they desire. Wow. Further, in Sovereign Bank's 2008 Economic Outlook Survey, arts and cultural attractions were rated second highest by business leaders as a top strength in Providence. (And that's just Providence.) I was reticent about waiting for my representative to come out of chambers at the state house in order to convince him that our community needs to maintain or create funding for the arts, but it was too important for me to be shy. He turned out to be open and enthusiastic about meeting again to talk further - what a relief. Listen: the arts are every bit as important - maybe more - as other subjects taught in school. (You should read my rant on the integration of art, math, science!) R. Buckminster Fuller, famous twentieth century architect, said about his structural designs, "When I'm working on a problem, I never think about beauty. I think only how to solve the problem. But when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong." RI4Arts has a handy formula that I like:
ARTS + EDUCATION = JOBS
To sum up: the arts teach imagination and innovation, and innovation and imagination are what businesses want. That's a key talking point for arts funding.
