"The president and I want to ensure that all children have access to great works of art"
~
Michelle Obama

From the President

"The arts are not just a nice thing to have," said Michelle Obama recently at the reopening of a part of the American Wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Artists, she added, "define who we are as a people." Well said, I thought. She went on to urge philanthropists and institutions to make art accessible to children.

It made me wonder how often I've seen children in our gallery, and I had to conclude, Not very. Portsmouth High School art teachers bring their students through the gallery once or twice a year as part of their art curriculum, but I haven't seen many adults come in with their children or grandchildren. If you have young children or grandchildren, share your membership with them; bring those curious young minds to the Arts Guild and expose them to art.

As this newsletter enters cyberspace, we are accepting entries for our "Imagine Yellow" juried exhibition (June 1, 3-6 pm; June 2, 6:30-8:30 pm). Mark your calendar to attend the opening reception and awards presentation on Friday, June 5, 6-8 pm. In addition to our regular shows, Arts Guild members often are presented with other valuable opportunities to show their work. One was last month in conjunction with Newport Winery's "First Burst" event. Another arrives in July with the third annual Art al Fresco show on the fence in Bristol. (See application details in this newsletter.) And a third is a special invitation to Portsmouth Arts Guild members to exhibit their work next January at the Rhode Island Watercolor Society at their gallery in Slater Park, Pawtucket. Details on that invitation, open to all 2-D Arts Guild artists will be forthcoming shortly.

In addition, the Guild is exploring other member meeting formats. In July, for example, our regular members' meeting (July 21) will be held at the studio of potter Denise Wilkey, in a session we're calling Pizza & Pottery. Denise will demonstrate how she makes raku pottery and while it's being fired, we'll dine on pizza and examine her many shelves of ceramics. Details of time and directions will be in the July newsletter, but save the date. You won't want to miss it. You also won't want to miss Kelley Carey MacDonald's discussion and demonstration of her artist's blog at our June 16 meeting. For a preview, see her blog site: http://kelleymacdonalddailypaint.blogspot.com.

Finally, a reminder: If you haven't sent in 5 names to add to our mailing list, do it now before you forget. We need to spread the news of our great shows. If you don't have 5, send 3. If you have more, send more, and send them to Phyllis Adams at phylmahoney@yahoo.com.

Thanks and ...
See you at the gallery!

~Eric Broudy

Sales Tax Info for Artists

From Mary Ann Martin:

It is not too early to start thinking about the December Holiday Table Sale at the Gallery.
If you think you may be participating, you will need your own Retail Sales Permit issued by the State of Rhode Island/Division of Taxation. The permit costs $10 for one year. You may apply at www.ri.gov/taxation/ (401-574-8732 or 401-574-8901).
Once you have your permit, you will be required to submit a very simple form quarterly along with the sales tax you have collected on your sales during that quarter. These would be sales you make privately or at arts/crafts shows. Galleries and shops are responsible for collecting and submitting sales tax (if required) on any sales they make on your behalf.

Editor's Reminder

Please remember to send a jpeg along with your achievement. Everyone will love to see an image of your acclaimed work!
