"Then followed that beautiful season... Summer....." ~Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

From the President
Perhaps hanging our next
exhibition, "Summer in Rhode Island," will have some influence on it actually
arriving. In any case, "Summer" opens with a warm reception Friday, July 3, 6-8
pm-a perfect way to start the holiday weekend. Stop by for a glass of wine and
toast the arrival of Summer in RI.
I had the pleasure a couple weeks
ago of presenting the second annual Eileen Gorton Shanley Scholarship award to
a graduating art student at Portsmouth High School. The deserving young artist
is Elizabeth Williamson, who is going on to study art at the University of
Central Florida. In addition to her other accomplishments, Elizabeth won First
Prize for one of her drawings at our Newport County Student Show in March. The
scholarship award consisted of a certificate and check for $200.
More good news: I'm please to
report that the art economy may be picking up a little. We had seven sales in
June-four paintings and three items of jewelry.
Still more: Congratulations to
"Imagine Yellow" cash prize winners-Anne Winthrop Cordin (1st,
$150), P. Jane Renwick (2nd, $100), Barbara Doyle (3rd,
$50), and Honorable Mention winners-Linda Lee Butler, Leonard Rumpler, Eileen
Silvia, and Phyllis Adams! Cash prizes will also be presented at "Summer" and
"Abstractions II," so plan to enter, plan to win.
And don't miss the next members'
meeting, July 21 (rain date July 23), at Denise Wilkey's pottery studio on East
Main Rd. next to Cumberland Farms (the one at the blinking light at Sprague
St.). It will feature Pizza & Pottery, a demonstration of raku pottery
making and tour of Denise's remarkable studio. Shelves of interesting pottery
pieces on display and for sale. Complimentary pizza and drinks. See note
elsewhere in this issue for directions and parking.
Dare I say it again? We're trying
to build our email lists for notifying art lovers of our great shows. If you
haven't already done so, send five names and email addresses of art lovers you
know to Phyllis Adams (phylmahoney@yahoo.com)
now, before you forget.
Finally, and most importantly,
we're looking for a chair or co-chair for our Education Committee to succeed
Dawn Sanford, who had to step down. If you're interested, please let me know
ASAP. Without a volunteer to chair this committee, we won't be able to offer
art classes in the fall. Thanks, keep creating, and ...
See you at the gallery!

Cadeaux du Monde. "Haitian Oil Drum Art". Continuing the Summer Newport
Gallery Night series, CADEAUX du MONDE's owner Katie Dyer will be
presenting ongoing informal gallery talks July 9 from 5pm-8pm exploring the varied traditions of modern Haitian
oil drum art. These gallery talks will be illustrated with CADEAUX du
MONDE's current collection of fairly traded modern Haitian Oil Drum Art
which is hand-tooled by hammering and cutting recycled steel oil drums.
These one of a kind works of folk art tell the stories of the art,
history and traditions of the Haitian people including the marrying of
the Voodoo religious traditions with Roman Catholicism.
26 Mary Street, CADEAUX du MONDE features fairly traded international folk art and Galerie Escalier, the
former servants' staircase, showcases local artists' works on a
rotating basis. For further information and directions to the gallery,

Editor's Note: I thought this article published in Sakonnet Times in June was important enough to impart to our 12 new members in July as well as to reiterate its message to everyone else. What our PAG president, Eric Broudy, says here is also an issue in my town, and the reason I feel we need to educate others that art is not just a "pretty picture on the wall" but intrinsic to the lives of real people. My simplified statement:
"Art IS the Message".
The arts are not only essential to our quality of living, but they also incorporate creative problem-solving tools for the looming challenges we face today in every aspect of our lives. They are the necessary creative processes with which we are able to gain - in the end- far-reaching and real solutions for these challenges.
"Portsmouth not an arts town? Don't believe it" Published in Sakonnet Times June 2, 2009
"To the editor:
People
keep telling me that Portsmouth is not an 'arts town.' Portsmouth
residents, they say, are big on sports and aren't particularly
interested in the arts. Bristol is an arts town, as is Tiverton and
Newport, they say. Not Portsmouth.
I find such statements curious
and a little difficult to comprehend, as the arts serve everyone,
sports fans included. Our everyday world would be pretty dull indeed
without art, music and theater to brighten the landscape. What is true
is that Newport has its galleries and art museum, Tiverton has its Four
Corners arts district, and Bristol has a downtown with a number of
galleries and artists' ateliers; Portsmouth has only the Portsmouth
Arts Guild Center for the Arts where one can view and purchase
contemporary art every week, 10 months of the year.
Yet I can't
believe that people have settled in Portsmouth to escape the arts that
run like rich veins of ore throughout so much of the state. Who would
say no to the enrichment, beauty, imagination and understanding that
the arts bring to our lives? Who hasn't picked up a paintbrush, a
camera, some yarn or clay, perhaps some beads, some clay or stone to
work? Who hasn't framed their children's drawings as if they were Van
Goghs? All towns are art towns because real people live in them -
people who seek beauty and solace and inspiration and understanding of
what they see and experience. In other words, all of us. ...Gallery hours are Thursday-Sunday, 1-5pm. Drop by and ask about our art classes, our monthly exhibitions, our
lectures and demonstrations. Bring your children. Show them that you
live in a town that values the arts, as you do.
Eric Broudy President, Portsmouth Arts Guild"

Editor's Reminder Please remember to send a jpeg along with your achievement. I received a jpeg from only one award winner at the "Imagine Yellow" show. Thank goodness I didn't have to stand on a chair again like this to take photos of the other work!
