From the President
Hey, I don't
mind a little rain, but to have it rain out TWO dates for the Pizza
& Pottery Members' Meeting last month was a bit much. The good
news is that Denise Wilkey has agreed to re-schedule for Tuesday, Aug.
18, 6:30 pm. (Raindate: Thurs., Aug. 20.) We weren't planning
on having an August meeting, but since we missed July and this session
was simply too good to miss, we moved it to August. I hope you can make
it. As before, if you can attend, it'd be helpful for you to RSVP
to Felicia Touhey at fstouhey@cox.net, 683-4414. Thanks, and hope for a
sunny day!
I've mentioned
before that a small subcommittee of the board of directors has been
working on ideas to gain greater visibility for the Arts Guild in the
Portsmouth community. Those ideas will be presented to the full board
at its August meeting. Subsequent to board approval of those recommendations,
I will be able to announce to you in the September Guild Ink
what changes you will begin to notice.
In the meantime,
one idea that doesn't require board approval I'm delighted to tell
you about now. We are printing Arts Guild decals, as seen below, for
display in car windows, on bumpers, foreheads, wherever. Every member
is entitled to one at no charge (family members get two). Additional
decals are available for $2.00 each and will be sold in the gallery.
You can pick up yours at the Aug. 18 members' meeting or at the gallery
thereafter. Display them proudly and help promote the Portsmouth Arts
Guild.

Our current
show that just opened, "Coastal Beauty," is an invitational exhibition
by the Westport Art Group and runs through Aug. 23. Your next opportunity
to show at the Guild is "Abstractions II," our second abstract-theme
show, juried by Michael Montanaro, artist and owner of the Montanaro
Gallery in Newport. Interpret the theme as you like and drop off your
work on Aug. 25 and 26 - same low member entry fee as always: $10 for
one, $5 each additional, limit of 3.
If you haven't
already heard, we're starting a Performing Arts Series in September.
This year, it consists of monthly performances on Sunday afternoons
at 3 pm, featuring a variety of musical and theatrical performances
to see what the Portsmouth community would like to attend. It begins
with a super fun group called the Superchief Trio on Sunday, Sept. 27.
Tickets are available at Clements' Market for $15, or by calling JP
Fernandes at 253-6682. See our website for details on the rest of this
year's performances; click on Performing Arts at the left side.
And don't
forget to check out "Coastal Beauty," an exhibition by the Westport
Art Group.
Thanks and ... See you at the gallery!

Sales Tax Info for Artists
From Mary Ann Martin:
It is not too early to start thinking about the December Holiday Table
Sale at the Gallery. If you think you may be participating, you will
need your own Retail Sales Permit issued by the State of Rhode Island/Division of Taxation. The permit costs $10 for one year. You may apply
at www.ri.gov/taxation/ (401-574-8732
or 401-574-8901). Once you have your permit, you will be required to
submit a very simple form quarterly along with the sales tax you have
collected on your sales during that quarter. These would be sales you
make privately or at arts/crafts shows. Galleries and shops are
responsible for collecting and submitting sales tax (if required) on
any sales they make on your behalf.
