From the President
The Exhibition
Committee has finished its work, and the list of shows for 2010 appears
elsewhere in this issue. It's an interesting array of shows, as you'll
see; two of them deserve special attention here.
First, next
May we're offering a juried photography show called "Beyond the
Lens," which we hope will be an exploration of what's happened to
the photographic medium since digital photography, Photoshop and other
new photo applications have begun to redefine what photography is and
can be. The only requirement to enter this show is that a camera was
used somewhere in the artistic process.
Second, we're
offering five of our members their own show in August. They will be
chosen by a group of three jurors in a competitive process. Members
who want to compete for this special Five Members' Invitational will
submit images (jpegs) of five of their works on CD to the Exhibition
Committee, which will forward submitted CDs to the jurors who will rate
the submissions. (The submitted works don't necessarily have to be
works that will be exhibited in the show, but they should give the juror
a sense of the artist's style and approach to his or her subject.)
The five highest-ranked entries will earn a place in this exhibition.
The show is open to all media. The entry fee is $25.
Here are
the deadlines: Submissions must be received, postmarked by Feb. 8, 2010.
(Send to Exhibitions, Portsmouth Arts Guild, P.O. Box 463, Portsmouth,
RI 02871). Jurying will take place in February and winners will be notified
by the March 16 members' meeting. Winners will then have until the
August show to prepare the body of work they plan to exhibit, probably
15 or so pieces. The work should be recent, not previously exhibited
at the Arts Guild, and show well together as a group. Accepted artists
must prepare an artist's statement and resume for posting with their
work.
Part of the
Jan. 19 members' meeting will be devoted to an explanation of the
process for photographing your artwork and downloading it to a CD for
submission and jurying. If you have questions, contact Anne Winthrop
Cordin, exhibition chair, at beachhouse73@msn.com, 683-0000.
Now is the
time to reserve your table for the special, one-day Holiday Table Sale
& Show, Sat., Dec. 5, 10 am - 4 pm. For $30 (and no sales commissions)
you get an 8-foot-long table to sell whatever artwork you do that lends
itself to display on the table-note cards, jewelry, silk-screened
T-shirts, matted prints, ceramics, wood carving, whatever. It's first-come,
first-served and there are only nine tables, so reserve yours now by
sending your $30 check to the Guild at P.O. Box 463 in Portsmouth.
And, speaking
of opportunties for Arts Guild members, we still have a couple spaces
left for the RI Watercolor Invitational Show at the RI Watercolor Society's
home in Slater Park, Pawtucket. The show runs Jan. 10-29, 2010, with
an opening reception Sunday, Jan. 10, 1-4 pm. It's non-juried, costs
$25 to enter, and you can hang 4-5 works. Any 2-D medium is eligible;
they don't have to be watercolors. Again, first-come, first-served,
so send your check now to P.O. Box 463 and reserve your space. (I mentioned
earlier that participants would have to provide refreshments for the
reception. I misspoke-the Arts Guild will pay for the reception.)
Finally (whew),
if you live in Portsmouth, you will be receiving in the mail later this
month a townwide survey asking your views on building a new, permanent
community arts center in Portsmouth. The survey, paid for by a RI Foundation
grant and the Portsmouth Arts Guild, is part of a joint effort between
the Arts Guild and the Town to explore whether building a center for
the visual and performing arts, probably by rehabbing the former Coggeshall
School on East Main Road, is desirable and viable. Watch for your survey,
and please fill it out and send it back. Thanks.
That's
more than enough information for one president's letter! But a final
word on artist opportunities: The Nov. 18 (Wednesday this month, not
Tuesday) members' meeting will feature a talk by Randy Rosenbaum,
executive director of the RI Council on the Arts on grants and other
opportunities for RI artists. He'll be joined by Lisa Carnavale, director
of RI Citizens for the Arts, who will discuss what that organization
is doing for RI artists.
See you at the gallery!

viewer's impression of each individual's characteristics in a way that
physiognomy alone could never do." At right are examples of her work. JP Fernandes has 2 paintings in Gallery X's "Lizzie Borden: A Tale of Two Cities" show running through November 15. Sales Tax Info for Artists
From Mary Ann Martin:
It is not too early to start thinking about the December Holiday Table
Sale at the Gallery. If you think you may be participating, you will
need your own Retail Sales Permit issued by the State of Rhode Island/Division of Taxation. The permit costs $10 for one year. You may apply
at www.ri.gov/taxation/ (401-574-8732
or 401-574-8901). Once you have your permit, you will be required to
submit a very simple form quarterly along with the sales tax you have
collected on your sales during that quarter. These would be sales you
make privately or at arts/crafts shows. Galleries and shops are
responsible for collecting and submitting sales tax (if required) on
any sales they make on your behalf.
