From the President
Happy New
Year and welcome to 2010, the Year of the Artist. It's about time,
don't you think? All seem
to agree that 2009 - thanks largely to the Gordon Gecko's of our time - was
disastrous for the arts and for artists. However, a recent survey by
the Arts and Business Council of RI is encouraging. It showed, among
other things, that 85% of respondents attended at least one arts performance,
event or exhibit and 81% would travel 20 minutes to get there. Thus, with
the power vested in me as president of The Portsmouth Arts Guild, I
hereby declare the start of the second decade of this century the beginning
of The Artistic Renaissance! Go now, ye artist members of the Arts Guild
and create your good works and prosper. One opportunity
for you to do just that is to submit your work for entry into our 5-Member
Invitational later this year. Our January 19 members' meeting will
give you all the details-how to photograph your work and transfer
it to a CD for jurying. Three jurors-Richard Benjamin, Dora Atwater
Millikin, Julie Smith - will review the works on CD and select the
5 members for the exhibition in August. It's open to all media, and
winners will be able to exhibit 15-20 works, depending on size. Deadline
for submission is Feb. 2010. Come to the meeting and learn all about it,
or contact Anne Winthrop Cordin for details at beachhouse73@msn.com, 683-0000 (yes, that's her real
phone no.). Here are
a few fun facts about your Arts Guild to start the new year: the Guild
currently numbers 166 members with 31% from Portsmouth, 14% from Bristol,
Tiverton 11%, Newport 11%, Middletown 7%, Barrington 5%, Jamestown 5%,
and 16% other. Last year we sold more than $3,000 of artwork, had 10
major exhibitions and four musical or theatrical performances. Our performing
arts series continues this spring with a chamber music performance by
the Providence String Quartet on Sunday, March 21, 3pm in the church.
And our exhibitions for 2010 begin on Feb. 27 with Emerging Artists
IV, our annual student show of high school students' work from
all Newport County, plus two others in Bristol and Warren. That's
followed by our annual All-Members Non-Juried Show in March. You've
already seen our entire exhibition schedule for 2010; if you haven't,
check it out on our website, www.portsmouthartsguild.org. It's shaping
up to be a good year for our members. It has to be because, after all,
2010 is The Year of the Artist!
See you at the gallery!

Rose M. Chase. Rose's painting "Boats on Rhode Island Shore" has been accepted into the
"Scenes of Rhode Island Show" at the State House in Providence. The Show
runs from December 7 through the end of January.
Paul Hitchen. Paul received a Juror's Award
(one of 6) in the Attleboro Arts Museum's 2009 Member's Show. His acrylic painting "Navajo", seen at right, will
be on exhibit till late January. Juror Kristen Zeiser had these comments about
"Navajo":
"The narrative propelled by the figure depicted is
rich and thoughtful. Themes of poverty, the American West, tradition, and
spirituality carried me throughout the landscape. I am drawn to the shape of
this piece, which lends beautifully to the horizon of the
composition."
