From the President
Have you
roused from their winter hibernation your watercolors, oils, pastels, digital
cards or film, clay, fiber, silver and gold, acrylics, charcoal, sea glass,
whatever it is you use to create your artwork? If not, sound the alarm, for
it's month no. 2 in The Year of the Artist and there's much to do.
But
first, if you haven't yet renewed your Arts Guild membership, it's now overdue.
Don't risk being dropped from our mailing lists and informative Guild Ink newsletter; get that renewal
in the mail today. Same goes for those who have not yet renewed their Member
Gallery for 2010-send that $20 in now to avoid having your work removed from
our website. And for those wanting to take advantage of that opportunity, check
it out on our website, send up to 16 jpegs of your work to Kathy Parker, web
manager, at mediagirl@cox.net, and a
check for $20 to P.O. Box 463.
Next,
send a CD with jpegs of 5 of your best works by Feb. 15 to enter our
first "5-Member Invitational Show". All media qualify. The show is in August so
you have plenty of time to prepare. See the website for details, or contact
Anne Winthrop Cordin, beachhouse73@msn.com.
And don't
miss our Feb. 16 members' meeting where Lois Erhartic will demystify the art of
Japanese calligraphy with an informative demonstration and discussion.
And while
I'm at it, here's what's coming soon to our Performing Arts Series for the
spring: The marvelous Providence String Quartet on Sunday, March 21, and jazz
singer Shawnn Montiero on Sunday, April 18, both at 3pm in the church with
reception following in the gallery. Mark your calendars now for both exciting
performances.
Please
don't forget that "Emerging Artists IV," our annual student art exhibition opens Saturday, Feb. 27, and will
feature work from every high school in Newport County as well as a couple in
Bristol and Warren. Attend the opening if you can and give our emerging young
artists your support.
Finally, in
conjunction with our annual spring, non-juried Members' Exhibition opening on
Sunday, March 14, the Portsmouth Community Theater will perform a 20-minute
staged reading of O. Henry's classic "The Last Leaf." Set in New York City in
the 1800s, the story revolves around a community of artists and an old man's
"final masterpiece." Director Cindy Killavey thought it would be a perfect pick
for PCT's first collaboration with the Guild. So did we. Come to the theater at
2pm, free admission, and then attend the opening of the Members' Exhibition.
That's it
for now. As I said, there's much to do; spring is just around the corner. Have
ideas for the Arts Guild? Send them to me. Thanks, and ...
See you at the gallery!

Joan DeRugeris. Joan will be exhibiting recent work at the Providence Art Club February 7-26. The Maxwell Mays Gallery opening will be February 7
from 2-4pm. Influenced by a recent trip to North Africa, this new body of work depicts villages and
vistas transposed on canvas as painterly
abstractions with figurative references to a different culture and
time. She uses patterns, forms, color and texture found in this part of
the world, breaking down the elements while still keeping the feel of
the subject matter. The Providence Art Club is located at 11 Thomas
Street, Providence, RI providenceartclub.org Janet Dussau. A photograph submitted by Janet to the Newport Art Museum Annual Members Exhibit
was accepted. There were 297 submissions and only 92 were accepted. She also had five photographs in the RIWS Invitational this month.
Paul Hitchen. Paul's acrylic
painting "Start" was selected for exhibition in the Providence Art Club's "Open Painting 2010 Show". View "Start" at right.
Marc Jaffee. "American Diner", was accepted in the 2010 Newport Art Museum Annual
Members' Juried Exhibition, and also in the Women & Infants' Staff
Art Exhibition.
Priscilla C. Malone. Priscilla has been juried into the Providence
Art Club as an artist member. Besides the Portsmouth Arts
Guild, she is also a member of the Rhode Island Watercolor Society, the Art League of Rhode Island, Spring Bull Gallery
and the designer of the "Forget Me Not" pin commissioned by the Alzheimer's
Association Rhode Island chapter. Designer
for Malone Studio Inc., stained glass & fine art, her paintings are on
display at Spring Bull Gallery in Newport. See her paintings at right. www.malonestudio.com
Karen Nash. "Monte Alban: Transfer of Power", Karen's styrofoam assemblage, has been juried into Newport Art Museum's annual juried Members' Show. See her sculpture at right.
Jonathan Small. "El Principio del Fin" (The Beginning of the End) was juried into Newport Art Museum's members' show. His depiction of a "bycatch" of orange roughy fish, meant to be thrown back overboard, shows how deep-sea habitats are decimated and the reason orange roughy are ranked as a species to "Avoid."
Karen Talbot. For the month of March, the Barrington library will have an exhibit called, "Interspecies", oil paintings by Karen that depict a "...cross pollination of flora, fauna, and flesh". At right is a sample of the exhibit, "Tender Fruits".
